When you grow up in Washington D.C. the news is part of the air you breathe. We had four newspapers on our doorstep every day and dinner table talk of current events. As a child of the Watergate era, Haldeman and Ehrlichman and Woodward and Bernstein were household names.
During 30+ years in the news business, from Toronto to New Orleans and points in between, I have covered prime ministers and presidents, national disasters and high-profile trials. But some of the stories of which I am most proud are those found off the beaten path, the nonagenarian Gettysburg guide who met a Civil War veteran as a child, the teams of Amish and Mennonites building Katrina-ravaged Mississippi, the hazards of the Pennsylvania Capitol tiles on the well-and-high heeled.
I spent 15 years covering politics and government for The Philadelphia Inquirer where I also founded Philly Dawg, the newspaper’s animal issues blog. Former staff bylines with the Associated Press, UPI, The Washington Post and the late APBNews.com. Current PennLive/Patriot News enterprise editor, Washington Post contributor and adjunct professor of journalism at Dickinson College.
